This is KIND of a wash because the GX has a higher gear, but if you are superstrong- a GX11 42 may be the best choice because you can run a larger front ring. The SLX46 allows you to run a 32 oval IIRC, where as the 50 is a 30 oval max- and that can be iffy. The problem with the GX12 isn't that the chain is closer to the tire (it isn't-well a little, but not enough to matter), but instead that it restricts how big of a front ring you can put on- particularly with ovals, because they will hit the underside of the elevated chainstay. I live in Idaho-not real rocky or rooty but very mountainous, I use the highest gear for about half of every ride and the lowest gear too damned often. The Yari was a better fit for me and my riding style. The Pike's a great fork but it's more trail oriented like a Fox 34.

The Yari's platform is designed for much more travel than you actually get on the Stache plus it's a big hit platform so it is SUPER stiff, but plush (I exchanged my Magnum Comp for a Yari). If you are a hard charger, the Stache is a HT that actually can make use of the stiffer platform of the Yari. So a few things, I don't know how heavy you are or what kind of riding you do but here are my thoughts- for history, I have a 2016 Stache 7 and because I get itchy, I've upgraded everything EXCEPT the bottom bracket, headset, and the seat: The 9.7 frame will be lighter and you will have the ability to build a lighter bike in the end with carbon, but one good tree crash and you're done. I've seen people buy and brag about carbon seatpost upgrades that are heavier and weaker than Thomson aluminum. Carbon versus Aluminum will always be a fight. People with upgrade'itis or those who need to own the latest greatest fight about the benefits of that one gear, but I wouldn't want to run my chain any closer to my tire than I already am with 11spd. Over all, I'm not that impressed with Eagle in theory. A house brand wheelset is fine for someone who buys new bikes all the time.but I've seen and heard of more than one shredded Bontrager line hub. Bombproof and very convertible/adaptable to new forks and frames if you change later. I'm a monster-fan of Hope hubs simply because I've still got my first Hope wheelset that I had built in 2006 and they're still running very strong. Sure, you get a warranty but a shredded hub after the warranty is over is an expensive fix. I sure as crap wouldn't buy Bontrager carbon wheelset. I'm running a Thomson stem and Deity bars because it's the perfect fit that I like. I'm really picky about my cockpit, so bars and stems usually go away. I'm running XT.Īll the Bontrager house brand parts don't impressed me at all. I have no experience with SRAM Guide R brakes, but they are probably a little better than the mt500's on the 7. Perceivable lateral stiffness of carbon will be muted by low psi far tires. Snappy, stiffer carbon frames? I don't much care and wouldn't notice on a 29+ bike all that much. Carbon takes a blunt hit or chip, and you will worry about it.

You rarely see people willing to buy second hand carbon frames. Noticeably? Maybe a little, but I doubt you'd miss it.Ĭarbon vs aluminum? Long debate there. Will it be better than a Yari? Initially, yes.

You can always upgrade the damper to one that's better than the Charger later if you want. The damper on the Yari is very effective for singletrack and ability to run Tokens allows for plush small bump compliance with good end of stroke resistance. No matter what, you're going to feel the trail via the 'hard tail'. The Pike is lighter, but overall bike weight is negligible and won't be noticed. I feel the benefits of the Charger damper on the Pike aren't as appreciable on a hardtail. I don't necessarily feel Eagle is an upgrade in performance in this bike.just bragging rights to have 1 more gear. The carbon bike will have a higher gear ratio (ability to go faster on pavement or smooth trail), but I'm running 30x11-40 on my Stache and rarely use my highest gear because I ride in the woods.not on the street. The 7 will climb better (easier) because the lowest gear is 18.6' vs 19.5' on the 9.7. The 9.7 gearing is 32x 10-50 (unless you change the 9.7's chainring) versus the 7 28x 11-46.
